2022 brought the first annual declinein the billionaire population since 2018,falling by 3.5% to 3,194 individuals.It was a year of heightened volatility forthe world economy, which emergedfrom a global pandemicto anew war inEurope, agenerational surge in inflationand deepening US-China tension. Totalwealth declined by 5.5% to $11.1trn, thesecond-largest annual fall in the pastdecade, althoughit only partially offsetthe double-digit surge recorded in 2021.

Still, it retained its status as the leadingbillionaire region-declining by 2.3% to
1,011individuals, a 32% global share.Asiarecorded the largest falls in billionairenumbers and wealth of any region in2022; the billionairepopulation fell by
7.1% to 835individuals.In Europe, thebillionaire population declined by 2.2%
to 933.
